Which ukulele should I get?
You do not need to spend much. Here is what to look for, with real examples at different budgets so you can compare your options.
Prices in screenshots from 16 October 2026, not live quotes. The starting prices below exclude fees and delivery. Your instrument is not included in the course fee.
The short version
What to get, and what to skip
Choose
- A standard four-string soprano or concert ukulele in G-C-E-A tuning.
- Concert gives your fingers a little more space. Soprano is smaller.
- A clip-on tuner or a tuning app on your phone.
Skip
- Baritone, bass or guitar-tuned instruments. They will not match these beginner lessons.
- Pickups, amps and other electronics.
- An expensive hard case. A simple bag is plenty.
Buying second-hand? Ask for the exact model and size, look for cracks or a warped neck, and check it stays in tune once tuned. Compare the total with a new instrument: fees and delivery can make a cheap used listing cost more than buying new.
